Early Intervention

For more information, see Early Intervention on MassResources.org.

What is Early Intervention?

Early Intervention (EI) is a program to help infants and toddlers who have developmental delays or are at risk for such delays. The goal of the program is to help children as soon as possible, so they can reach their full potential. Early Intervention specialists work with families to figure out what services are needed and the best way to provide those services.

Am I eligible?

Early Intervention is for children from birth to age three who are not developing typically for their age. Early Intervention is also for children who are at risk because of biological or environmental factors such as premature birth or homelessness. A team of specialists evaluates each child to see if the child is eligible for services.

What benefits will I get?

Parents and Early Intervention specialists work together to decide what services the child and family will get. Together they develop an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). The IFSP may include speech and language therapy, physical or occupational therapy, counseling, nursing care, social services, and other specialty services. Services are provided at home, at child care centers, or at other locations where the child feels comfortable. When possible, services are included in the child's normal daily activities. Transportation is available.

How much does it cost?

Early Intervention services are free for families with limited incomes. Families with higher incomes may have to pay an annual fee that ranges from $60 to $500 per child.

How do I apply?

How do I use my benefits?

You and the Early Intervention providers will develop an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) together. Your IFSP will include your child's evaluation results, your goals for your child, the services you and your child will get, and your rights as a parent. You should make sure you agree with the plan before you sign it.
