What is Healthy Start?
Healthy Start is a free health insurance program for pregnant uninsured low-income women, to help them give their babies a healthy start in life. The program offers early, complete prenatal care to pregnant women and their unborn children, two months of postpartum care, family planning services, and counseling and referrals. MassHealth is in charge of this program in Massachusetts.
Am I eligible?
Healthy Start is for low-income pregnant women who have little or no health insurance coverage for pregnancy and are not eligible for MassHealth. Immigration status does not matter for this program. You must meet income limits and be a resident of Massachusetts.
What benefits will I get?
Healthy Start offers early, complete prenatal care to pregnant women and their unborn children. The program also offers two months of postpartum care, family planning services, and counseling and referrals. All Healthy Start services are free.
How do I apply?
To apply for Healthy Start, you must complete the Medical Benefit Request (MBR) form, which is a joint application for Healthy Start and MassHealth. You can download this form from the MassHealth web site at MassHealth Applications, or you can call MassHealth Customer Service at 1-800-841-2900.
Worcester residents can also apply for Healthy Start at the Family Health Center (508-860-7700) or the Great Brook Valley Health Center (508-852-1805) in Worcester. Healthy Start staff members will help you with your application, answer your questions, and make sure your health care needs are met.
