Emergency Assistance
What is Emergency Assistance?
Emergency Assistance (EA) is a Massachusetts program that gives shelter and other emergency housing services to low-income families with children, and to pregnant women, to prevent homelessness. The program helps eligible families who are homeless with nowhere else to live.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible for Emergency Assistance, you must be a family with dependent children under 21 years of age, or a pregnant woman with or without children. Your family must have little income or savings. For income and asset limits, see Financial Eligibility Requirements on MassResources.org. You must be homeless, with nowhere else to live. Also, you must be a U.S citizen or eligible noncitizen.
Eligibility Check
The MassResources.org Emergency Assistance Eligibility Check is an easy way for you to find out if you are likely to qualify for Emergency Assistance. After you answer a set of questions about your family, your living situation, your income, and your expenses, you will see the results of the eligibility check right away, on your computer screen.
What benefits will I get?
The DHCD will place you in temporary emergency shelter and help you find permanent affordable housing. The DHCD will try to keep your family together, find a shelter nearby, and make sure your children do not have to change schools. The DHCD will work with you to develop a plan for rehousing (self-sufficiency plan) with a budget, savings plan, and housing search plan.
How do I apply?
To apply for Emergency Assistance, you should contact the DHCD homeless coordinator at the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) office, 1-800-249-2007. For the DTA office address, hours, and other contact information, see Worcester Benefit Office Locations - Department of Transitional Assistance. Most applications for Emergency Assistance are filled out on a computer in the office, using a program called BEACON. The DHCD homeless coordinator will ask you the questions and enter the information for you.
